Rocking Horse Farm 198: Cape/Cloak/Mantle.

For centuries the cape/cloak/mantle was a simple circular or rectangular piece of fabric with a hole cut for the head. It was used for a blanket at night and a body covering by day, functional but not fashionable. Early capes/cloaks wrapped around the body for warmth and protection. The type of fabric used to make it was determined by the climate.

In the 16th cetury, cape/cloaks finally became a fashion of its own when they began being shaped, sewn and often lined. The 17th, 18th and 19th centuries saw voluminous cape/cloaks with 1 to 3 shoulder capes, collars, and made of rich fabrics. The plainer ones were worn for riding or traveling. For the rich and those with a sense of the dramatic, cloaks could be worn draped casually over one shoulder.
