The corset is *the* essential element in creating the upper half of a fashionable silhouette. Only a "fallen woman" went without a corset. Even the poorest woman in the workhouse was given some kind of corset -- it was essential to be decently dressed.
The silhouette of this period was long and stiff, yet subtly curvaeeous. The bust and hips were gently rounded (and often padded), the waist was long and lean. Through much of this period the back of the profile was defined by an aggressive bustle. In general, the lady's shape implied "go away closer."
